Background
While writing his international bestseller, The Perfect Storm, Sebastian Junger developed tremendous respect for the fishermen of Gloucester. With the success of the book, Sebastian wanted to give their children the kinds of opportunities he experienced growing up that made it possible for him to write The Perfect Storm. The hardships of the job, the skill and rugged commitment of those who make their living on the sea, inspired author Sebastian Junger to establish The Perfect Storm Foundation.
Our Mission
The mission of The Perfect Storm Foundation is to provide educational and cultural opportunities to young people whose parents make their living in the commercial fishing industry and in working maritime communities.
The Perfect Storm Foundation is not solely a scholarship fund. Research shows that young people who, early on, set goals and develop a strong sense of self tend to make healthier choices. We seek to support the spirit of discovery in young people through creatively fostering their opportunities for growth. |

Our Goal
Our long-term goal is to build a well-respected, national Foundation that will serve as an ongoing tribute to, and resource for, the men and women, and their children, who have made their livelihood in the commercial fishing industry.
We believe the educational and cultural opportunities the Foundation provides will expand young people's experience beyond the fishing community. When they dare to be curious, their spirit of adventure and discovery can enlighten their minds. We encourage them to dream.
While focusing on the wellbeing and health of the individual child, we understand that the environment in which a child grows and develops is key. Therefore, we hope that the opportunities we provide will impact, in positive way, the child's family environment.
